His Holiness the Dalai Lama
His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama was born on 6 July 1935, to a farming family, in Taktser, Amdo, northeastern Tibet. He became both Tibet's spritual leader as well the head of the state at the very young age of 15. The Dalai Lamas are believed to be manifestations of Avalokiteshvara the Bodhisattva of Compassion and patron saint of Tibet. Bodhisattvas are enlightened beings chosen to take rebirth in order to serve humanity. When China invaded Tibet in year 1959, Dalai lama and thousands of Tibetans fled to Dharamsala in northern India. He took enormous efforts in a hope to establish an Autonomous Tibet under China(PRC) but China declined to take in peace negotiations.
The Dalai Lama has written many books, conducted hundreds of conferences, lectures, workshops at major universities and institutions throughout the world engaging in wisdom, compassion and, environmental sustainability, as part of his humanitarian efforts. Awards and honors presented to Dalai Lama includes Honorary Doctorates from leading universities to Honorary Citizenship from countries like Ukraine, Canada, Italy, Paris, Wroclaw, Memphis, United State's Congressional Gold Medal and Nobel Peace Prize in 1989. In December 2008, the Dalai Lama declared his semi-retirement.
